ALEX RYDER: the live interview.

On Thursday, February 21, RADIO MELTDOWN’S DJ Chris and DJ Hellsbelle interviewed the fabulously talented rocker ALEX RYDER in a fun two-hour interview (which may be heard in its’ entirety on the embedded player below).  During the interview, songs from Alex’s EP  WON’T YOU LISTEN can be heard.

When asked about her earliest inspiration to pursue a career in music, she gave the major influence to Michael  Jackson.   Jackson was multi-talented in writing, singing, dancing but also in producing and promoting his work and his successes inspire Alex.

When asked which artists she would most like to tour with, Alex cited Bon Jovi, Nickeback, Pat Benatar immediately.  She also says that her own work has often been compared to Pat Benatar, Joan Jett and Melissa Etheridge, but she maintains that you still must have your own sound.  Alex says the goal is that you don’t want to copy someone else, you want to be an individual, you want to be as successful as those artists.

Alex talked about the process of writing songs and took questions from the audience via Twitter on the writing process.  “I’ve always written songs . . . I love writing, it’s therapeutic . . . There is a whole creative process that goes on with every musician who is a songwriter—some write lyrics first, some do music  first.” Songwriters will sometimes work alone, sometimes in collaboration with other musicians. At times the creative process is long and more iterative, but sometimes it flows very quickly.    For example, My Tears Are Rain was conceived, composed, recorded (including backing tracks) in three hours.

Alex also performed the backing harmonies for all the songs on the new EP.

Alex likes being in the studio, but loves performing live.  So much energy comes from the audience and that feeling cannot be duplicated in the studio.  And Alex is planning a tour which includes the US in 2013.  When asked  “If you could play any venue in the world, which would be your first choice?”  Alex said it would  be  Wembley Stadium.

Radio Meltdown DJ Jester asked via chat that if you could ask any person  any one thing, who and what would it be?  Alex replied, tongue firmly in cheek, she would ask Jon Bon Jovi to share some microwave pizza with DJ Chris.

Laurie, a listener (aged 5), asked if it is hard to become a musician and when did she decided to be a musician.  Alex started in music a little later than normal, she was more into sports as a child.  For a time she was a competitive athlete (table tennis-she was a member of the Canadian National Team).

Via Twitter, listener Jaxiblue wanted to know if Alex had any staples and must-haves--things she wouldn’t leave home without.  Yes, said Alex:  not without cherry Chapstick, bandanas and always wearing  two pairs of socks;  anyone with experience of Ottawa  winter weather might agree.  During performance, she’s never on stage without a pair of big clunky leather boots.

And speaking of being on stage,  2013 has been shaping up to be a great year for Alex—interviews, writing, travelling, touring and getting back into the studio and recording.   Tours for the coming year are in the works, with tours to the US and the UK planned.

Having entered music a bit later than some, Alex brings the dedication of the serious competitive athlete to the business of music.  “It is a difficult business to be in . . . People will try to bring you down, some intentionally some unintentionally, and you have to strive for what you want . . . You have to be dedicated . . . You have to be passionate.”

Alex brings that same dedication and passion into her music, as anyone listening to her songs can hear.  RADIO MELTDOWN is proud to have Alex as a guest and to play and support the music of this wonderful artist.

Alex lives in Ottawa, Ontario, the capitol city of Canada.   Her six-piece band is also from Ottawa.  Band members: Bobby Littlemore-Guitar, Steven Rae-Bass, Fred Pantalone-Drums, Yvan Tessier-Keys, Ornella Kennedy- BG Vocals, Tracy Rush-BG Vocals
