DJ`Mercury is going LIVE!

We have been telling you all for a while about the improvements we are making to our awesome bot and AutoDJ, DJ`Mercury. Very soon we will have the one thing we have been working on for a very long time in place and that is for our listeners to be able to request from the AutoDJ when there is no live DJ on air.

However, in order that DJ`Mercury plays the music you want to hear, we need your help. We want you, the listeners, to let us know what sort of music you would like to be able to choose from. No point having music on the AutoDJ that doesn’t appeal is there?

So, send an email to with the 10 albums you would most like to listen to on the AutoDJ and very soon you could be listening to your own choice live on Radio Meltdown!

A Change is being made . . . .

Last weekend, Radio Meltdown received a notification from its streaming host company that they would be changing the IP address of our stream and that after March 29, 2013, the existing stream will cease and all listeners must connect to the new stream address.  This action was taken by our hosting company as part of their own expansion plans and not as anything requested by Radio Meltdown.  Nevertheless, as some of our listeners have reported difficulty connecting to our existing stream address, we hope this change cures those issues.

Radio Meltdown DJs will begin broadcasting on both streams Thursday, March 28, and continue to send to both streams until the existing one ceases operation.  The new stream address is: Put this address in your players, or you can use We are in the process of updating all links and web-based media players to reflect the change, with the expectation we will be finished on or before Friday, March 29. We regret any inconvenience this change may cause our friends and fans, all the loyal MeltHeads we appreciate so much!  We thank you all for your support.

DJ`Jester is NOW GREEEEEN!!!!!

Hello fellow MeltHeads!! So, about a month or so ago, DJ`Jester challenged all of the DJs to get 150 more “Likes” on our fabulous Facebook page. I love a good challenge and wanted to make sure it happened. And guess what.... IT HAPPENED!!! All of the DJs made sure to promote the contest on the air and get all their friends and listeners to “like” the page. It was a combined effort and has been successfully accomplished. Yes, indeed VICTORY was getting a total of 250 likes; we now have 258 (as of 3/11/13 around 7:15 PM est).

“THEME TUESDAY” has now officially moved to “THEME THURSDAY” and the first winner is BRYAN!

My Shows have recently moved times and days and, as I am a big fan of alliteration, I thought that having my Theme Shows on Thursday made perfect sense. The first winner of my “THEME THURSDAY” Show is Bryan from the #AllNiteCafe over on DalNet, who correctly identified the theme, which was that all the songs played came off Best Selling Albums that contained at least 3 Number One Songs. Congratulations to him on winning the KUDOS TO YOUAward!

Keep tuned into my Thursday Shows, from 3:00pm to 6:00pm est. You never know when the next “THEME THURSDAY” will be!

ALEX RYDER: the live interview.

Photo: John Major

On Thursday, February 21, RADIO MELTDOWN’S DJ Chris and DJ Hellsbelle interviewed the fabulously talented rocker ALEX RYDER in a fun two-hour interview (which may be heard in its’ entirety on the embedded player below).  During the interview, songs from Alex’s EP  WON’T YOU LISTEN can be heard.

When asked about her earliest inspiration to pursue a career in music, she gave the major influence to Michael  Jackson.   Jackson was multi-talented in writing, singing, dancing but also in producing and promoting his work and his successes inspire Alex.

When asked which artists she would most like to tour with, Alex cited Bon Jovi, Nickeback, Pat Benatar immediately.  She also says that her own work has often been compared to Pat Benatar, Joan Jett and Melissa Etheridge, but she maintains that you still must have your own sound.  Alex says the goal is that you don’t want to copy someone else, you want to be an individual, you want to be as successful as those artists.

Alex talked about the process of writing songs and took questions from the audience via Twitter on the writing process.  “I’ve always written songs . . . I love writing, it’s therapeutic . . . There is a whole creative process that goes on with every musician who is a songwriter—some write lyrics first, some do music  first.” Songwriters will sometimes work alone, sometimes in collaboration with other musicians. At times the creative process is long and more iterative, but sometimes it flows very quickly.    For example, My Tears Are Rain was conceived, composed, recorded (including backing tracks) in three hours.

Alex also performed the backing harmonies for all the songs on the new EP.

Alex likes being in the studio, but loves performing live.  So much energy comes from the audience and that feeling cannot be duplicated in the studio.  And Alex is planning a tour which includes the US in 2013.  When asked  “If you could play any venue in the world, which would be your first choice?”  Alex said it would  be  Wembley Stadium.

Radio Meltdown DJ Jester asked via chat that if you could ask any person  any one thing, who and what would it be?  Alex replied, tongue firmly in cheek, she would ask Jon Bon Jovi to share some microwave pizza with DJ Chris.

Laurie, a listener (aged 5), asked if it is hard to become a musician and when did she decided to be a musician.  Alex started in music a little later than normal, she was more into sports as a child.  For a time she was a competitive athlete (table tennis-she was a member of the Canadian National Team).

Via Twitter, listener Jaxiblue wanted to know if Alex had any staples and must-haves--things she wouldn’t leave home without.  Yes, said Alex:  not without cherry Chapstick, bandanas and always wearing  two pairs of socks;  anyone with experience of Ottawa  winter weather might agree.  During performance, she’s never on stage without a pair of big clunky leather boots.

And speaking of being on stage,  2013 has been shaping up to be a great year for Alex—interviews, writing, travelling, touring and getting back into the studio and recording.   Tours for the coming year are in the works, with tours to the US and the UK planned.

Having entered music a bit later than some, Alex brings the dedication of the serious competitive athlete to the business of music.  “It is a difficult business to be in . . . People will try to bring you down, some intentionally some unintentionally, and you have to strive for what you want . . . You have to be dedicated . . . You have to be passionate.”

Alex brings that same dedication and passion into her music, as anyone listening to her songs can hear.  RADIO MELTDOWN is proud to have Alex as a guest and to play and support the music of this wonderful artist.

Alex lives in Ottawa, Ontario, the capitol city of Canada.   Her six-piece band is also from Ottawa.  Band members: Bobby Littlemore-Guitar, Steven Rae-Bass, Fred Pantalone-Drums, Yvan Tessier-Keys, Ornella Kennedy- BG Vocals, Tracy Rush-BG Vocals

Recent changes at Radio Meltdown

We like to  think we keep on making RADIO MELTDOWN a great place to visit, to tune in and to have fun with!   Recently, we’ve made some changes we hope will enhance everyone’s enjoyment of the experience.

"We can dance if we want to . . . ."
Mercury, our erstwhile and plucky major domo bot has long been able to take requests in the IRC channels that sponsor us and convey them to the live DJ, and this has been fun for all.  Now Mercury has joined the Twitterverse!  He has his own Twitter nickname - @RMRequests -  and he’s busily tweeting out all the selections played on Radio Meltdown’s stream.  We decided to give him his own Twitter account so that the Radio Meltdown timeline wouldn’t just be a long string of #NowPlaying posts;  we wanted the Radio Meltdown account  to be used for announcements, schedules and things of note for our friends and fans.
Additionally, Mercury  will now also take requests via Twitter, and you don’t have to follow him to do so.  Just send him a little message, such as “@RMRequests !request Artist – Song Title” and any of our live DJs will get that message and play your song for you.  You can even add a little dedication note following the request if you desire, but start the message with the format indicated; you are, after all, dealing with a bot!

While presently the !Request function only works with our live DJs, we are working on implementing it for Mercury's autodj function as well, so that you can always hear your favorite tunes on Radio Meltdown!  We are also working on a web page request function for those that don’t have Twitter accounts.  Stay tuned to Radio Meltdown and this blog for announcements.

Speaking of our stream, we recently upgraded our speed from the initial 64 kbs to a beautifully clear 96 kbs, and we hope you enjoy the difference.  Many of our regular listeners have commented approvingly upon the change and we are glad they like it.  We think you will, too.  The website players also get the new higher speed stream.

In response to requests from some of our listeners around the world, we’ve added two auxiliary streams to our station.  The first is a stream for those who need a low-speed connection to Radio Meltdown because of bandwidth issues, either dial-up or shared connections or even for some mobile phones.  This stream is broadcasting at 32 kbs, and while that is not as high as our normal stream, it still sounds great!  And the lower bandwidth demand makes it a good choice when that is an issue.

The second auxiliary stream came about because some of our listeners reported difficulty connecting to our regular stream.   So we set up a secondary stream at 96 kbs to act as a kind of relay for those who can’t connect to us at our usual  domain addresses or the IP for the stream itself.  Both the dial-up and this secondary full speed stream are slightly lagged behind the main stream, but not seriously so.

Both streams have web pages with Flash players tuned to their respective streams, but you may load the stream addresses into your favorite media player and connect directly.  Unfortunately, at the present time, the individual song data is unavailable.

To connect to our Dial-up stream:

As always, RADIO MELTDOWN thanks you all for your support and hopes you’ll keep tuning in as we continue to make the station a fun place to be!

And tell your friends!

I thought New Year’s Day would be a good time to continue with “THEME TUESDAY”, where the listeners have to try and guess the theme of my Show. Because it was New Year's Day I decided on a seasonal theme - though I did keep away from any of the obvious Christmas hits, to make it a little more challenging! There were lots of guesses – many absolutely hilarious – and no, Odd, it was NOT dodgy nose jobs LoL.

Gothess from ANC on DalNet almost got the answer, but congratulations to sourpatchkid from Pleasure_Library on, who wins the first KUDOS TO YOU award of 2013 for correctly guessing the theme, which was that all the songs played were Number Ones on New Year’s Day.

Keep listening to my Tuesday night shows – you never know when the next “THEME TUESDAY” will be!
